Guns and stupidity cannot cohabit

Although I am not shocked, I am saddened by the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial. Accused of stalking and shooting Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old black youth who was visiting his father, on Saturday, July 13, 2013, a jury found Zimmerman not guilty.

My sadness comes from the fact that guns and stupidity cannot cohabit. That's right. A country that enables any and all persons to arm themselves and "stand their ground" as Florida law allows, will continue to have tragic outcomes.

I fully believe that as a neighborhood watch captain, Zimmerman racially profiled Martin and when the 911 operator told him not to follow the suspect, tapes have clearly shown that he disregarded the request. These two incidents, combined with the fact that Zimmerman was driving around with a gun in his pocket led to Martin's death.

We will never know what occurred during the direct confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin and because of that fact, a jury was forced to acquit the man on trial for a youth's untimely and tragic death. However, the world cannot excuse Zimmerman's stupidity.

Zimmerman's racist behavior combined with extremist views that guns are needed in order to protect oneself point to a society that is building itself on fear and hatred. If we look at the world with suspicious eyes, we won't be able to see the good when it arrives. And that adds to my sadness.

As the author of the Experience Optimism blog, I know there is plenty of good to be seen. From something as simple as donuts that make people happy or quotes that inspire people to live up to their full potential, we have wonderful opportunities to leave a positive impact on the world.

In my opinion, guns only detract from the possibilities. Perhaps we should pick up a fishing pole instead. When we teach a kid to fish, we teach patience and wonder that one can feel throughout their life and that is a much better lesson than violence in any form. Who knows, with a little luck, that slower, less suspicious pace will leave the space we need to be happy and to just get along.

Recipe for a happy life

I've belonged to a listserve for Optimist Club members for about five years. The unofficial service has existed long before that; I think it was established in 1998. Even with that longevity, it hasn't garnered a large following, but it has generated a loyal one.

experienceoptimismOne of the loyal participants has contributed a daily thought to the forum every day that I can remember. Some I really like, some not so much. Many are sayings that I've heard before, sometimes attributed to different author, but they always do one thing.

These daily quotes make me think and reflect. Several participants randomly respond to her musings when it touches them in a certain way, but I would venture to say that most often the reader does the same as I. They read, think and then delete.

Today I want to share her thought on the Experience Optimism blog. She didn't give attribution to this little poem, but it sounds like a recipe for a happy life. Why not give it a try?
Live without pretending,
Love without depending,
Listen without defending,
Speak without offending.

Make your optimism come true

According to Helen Keller, "Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." How right she is and was on so many topics, but none more so than the subject of being a positive force and a beacon of hope in the world.

optimismEveryone knows her story; born blind and deaf, she struggled from an early age to be understood. And while her wonderful, patient teacher and friend Annie Sullivan taught her to communicate, Miss Sullivan also taught her parents to expect more of their child born with exceptional challenges. Together they began their lifelong work to change how others look at individuals with disabilities. More important, they gave others the confidence to overcome whatever challenges they face in their lives.

For that reason, I believe Helen Keller is the ultimate optimist. She made her own luck. She looked at the sunny side of everything. She spoke of health, happiness and prosperity. She expected only the best. I encourage you to accept that challenge as well; beginning today, overcome your obstacles, find your path and work diligently to make your optimism come true.

Pick a favorite day

A. A. Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, had a simple way of writing that makes the reader happy especially when she is reading aloud to children, and even when she comes upon a quote online. Taking a few lines of the characters' conversation and applying them to our crazy, multitasking world is a way to help us slow down and savor the moment, the beauty and joy of the moment.

As Pooh, Piglet and Eeyore and others would amble through the forest, they would learn to trust each other in good times and trying times as they solved problems and shared stories and laughs. Every day they shared optimism, friendship and hope.

What day is your favorite day? I hope it's today.
